“30 years later!! On this day, By the grace of God I was ordained as the first female transitional deacon in the Dominican Republic. Thank you, Bishop Telésforo Isaac, for trusting in my calling.”

¿De joven, ¿quién lo inspiró a trabajar para la Iglesia? | As a youth, what inspired you to work for the Church?
Tuve la bendición de estudiar en un colegio Episcopal en mi ciudad natal San Francisco de Macorís. Ver la devoción y el trabajo que desarrollaban los rectores en la comunidad me Inspiro a querer ser uno de ellos. Pudiera mencionar dos. En primer lugar el hoy Dean de la catedral Ashton J. Brook y el Rev. Daniel Robles. Estos junto a sus esposas daban un real testimonio de servicio digno de imitar. Otra que me inspiro fue la hoy reverenda Mercedes Julián, quien en una ocasión siendo seminarista, vino a nuestra iglesia a dar una charla sobre “La ofrenda Unida de gracia”.
I had the blessing to study at an Episcopal school in my hometown of San Francisco de Macorís. I saw the hard work and devotion of the rectors in that community and I was inspired to want to be one of them. I will mention two of them: Ashton J. Brook, the Dean of the Cathedral and the Rev. Daniel Robles. These two men (along with their wives) gave a real testimony of service worthy of imitation. Another one that inspired me was the Reverend Mercedes Julián, who on one occasion as a seminarian came to our church to give a talk about “The United Thank Offering”.

El saber que había mujeres estudiando para el ministerio ordenado me confirmaba que a buena cosa anhelaba. Posteriormente la Rev. Mercedes Julián se le niega la ordenación en nuestra diócesis, decide ir a Panamá donde la ordenan. Su fidelidad a su llamado fue muy inspiradora.
Knowing that there were women studying for the ordained ministry confirmed in me something that I longed for. Ultimately, Rev. Mercedes Julián was denied ordination in our diocese, so she decided to go to Panama where she was ordained. Her fidelity to her calling was very inspiring.

¿Cuándo supo que fue llamado al sacerdocio? | When did you know you were called to the priesthood?
Como parte de mi ministerio juvenil asistía a varios talleres que se impartían en el seminario sobre liderazgo, música, etc. La convivencia con los seminaristas y el querer siempre estar involucrada en los quehaceres propios de la iglesia me cuestionaba si este era el lugar perfecto para mí. Para aquel entonces la participación de la mujer en la liturgia estaba bien limitada. había una seminarista panameña, Diana Suarez que comenzó a tener su practica pastoral en mi iglesia local. Ella me ayudo mucho en el discernimiento necesario para ese entonces.
As part of my youth ministry, I attended various workshops that were held in the seminary on leadership, music, etc. During these workshops, I lived with seminarians and I was always interested in being involved in the work of the church.
I wondered if this was my calling. But at that time, women’s participation in the liturgy was very limited. There was a Panamanian seminarian, Diana Suarez who began her internship in pastoral practice at my church. She helped me immensely in discerning my call.
¿Como la primera mujer que buscaba la ordenación, ¿su camino fue sencillo o hubo obstáculos que superar? | As the first woman to seek ordination, was your path easy or were there obstacles to overcome?
En los inicios tuve tiempos difíciles, pues venia de una familia en donde era obligatorio hacer una carrera universitaria y tuve que dejar mi llamado a un lado. Posteriormente me gradué de Arquitecta en la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, Para luego ingresar al seminario.
It was difficult in the beginning because I came from a family where it was compulsory to do a university degree and I had to leave my call aside. I graduated as an Architect at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, and later entered the seminary.

Soy la primera mujer ordenada en República Dominicana. Hubo otras antes de mí que aunque no la ordenaron, me prepararon el camino. Para ordenar mujeres estaba bien difícil hasta se rumoraba que si no iban a ordenarlas, para que dejarlas estudiar en el seminario. Paciencia y mucha oración fueron decisivos para terminar. Algunos de mis compañeros y hasta profesores del seminario no compartían la idea de mujeres ordenadas en la iglesia.
I am the first ordained woman in the Dominican Republic. There were others before me that, although they were not ordained, they prepared the way for me. The ordination of women was very difficult. It was even rumored that they were not going to ordain women, so they would let them study at the seminary thinking they were never going to be ordained. It took a lot of patience and prayer, and I had to persevere to the end. Some of my classmates and even seminary professors did not share the idea of ordained women in the church.

¿Hay nuevas metas que cumplir en su vida como sacerdote? | Are there new goals to meet in your life as a priest?
Estoy trabajando con latinos de países, culturas y nivel socioeconómico diferente. Me gustaría desarrollar mas mis conocimientos y crear una liturgia en la que todos y todas nos sintamos cómodos como parte de una misma iglesia. Además escribir mis memorias, para que estas sirvan de inspiración a mas mujeres en que es posible el ministerio ordenado.
I am currently working with Latinos from different countries, cultures and socioeconomic status. I would like to further develop my knowledge and create a liturgy that all of us will feel comfortable as part of the same church. I would also like to write my memoirs, so that it would serve as inspiration to include more women who might be interested in ordained ministry.
